In the world of food, there are many plants that people consider to be vegetables, but are actually fruits, botanically speaking.

There are more than a dozen of fruits that are widely used as vegetables. Fruit is a seed-bearing part of the plant that develops while a vegetable consists of portions of the plants such as roots, stem and leaves. Here are some of the popular vegetables that are commonly mistaken for fruits.

Tomato

Even though tomatoes are technically a fruit, it doesn’t stop people from treating it as a vegetable. Botanically speaking, tomatoes are the fruit of a vine. Tomato is one of the most common food items that is actually a fruit but mostly used as a vegetable in making various meals and food dishes.

Avocado

Avocados are generally used as vegetable in salads, but are actually fruits and more specifically single seed berries. It is loaded with healthy fats, fiber and various important nutrients and can also be used in desserts

Eggplant

Contrary to popular belief, eggplant is not a vegetable, but a fruit. It has a fleshy texture and tiny seeds and botanically categorized under fruits but are used as a vegetable with spices and salt to prepare meals.

Cucumber

Well many people would have heard the phrase as cool as a cucumber and eaten it as a vegetable but is, in fact, a fruit in biological terms.

Bell Peppers

Ball Peppers are from the family of Capsicum which are under vegetables, but, in botanical terms it fits the bill as a fruit.

Okra

Okra is commonly known as Lady Finger and have edible seeds and are used as vegetables in stews and soups.

Green Peas

The green color and sour flavor, does not make peas vegetable, but are widely used as vegetables in many dishes. Technically, peas aren’t the fruit here, but the pods are. That’s because they contain the seeds that are called peas.
